February 2019
While escaping the winter deep freeze, 14 volunteers ventured south to the Rio Texas conference to help with Hurricane Harvey restoration. People came from Montana (2 HUMC members), Wyoming, and Colorado to assist cleanup in homes and offices located in Rockport, Fulton, and Aransas Pass, Texas. Projects included 1) partial demolition and rebuilding of a double-wide trailer, 2) exterior wall preparation and painting of a home, 3) laying down laminate flooring in another home, plus 4) wall preparation and painting of Rio Texas conference offices and hall.
Great satisfaction not only came from rebuilding the homes, but also daily fellowship within our Mountain Sky team, and with a Houston-based Baptist team and young AmeriCorps volunteers. Physical improvements to the homes were evident and a source of great satisfaction; however, each volunteer's personal pleasure from assisting others was even more palpable. Many team members will be volunteering again in the future!
